The Fox and the Kokopelli – A Bard AI Session

Today I wanted to test Bard. In the past week. since the release of Gemini, lots has been said about its capabilities, so I wanted to try it… This “session” was an impromptu / ad hoc / no prep session about 15 minutes. No correcting or deep prompting — just a simple free flow of ideas with no plan ( in fact it took me longer to write this article than the session itself!)

The conversation took place in the Bard Chatbot and it looked liked this:

Session Details

Went to Bard ( https://bard.google.com/ ), logged in with my personal account, uploaded a random image I had in my temp folder and ask:

Can you tell me what these photos are?

It responded:

The image you sent is two black and white drawings of a fox and a man. The fox is sitting on a chair, and the man is standing next to it. The fox is wearing gloves, and the man is wearing a hat and coat.

The drawings are very simple, but they are also very expressive. The fox looks curious and playful, and the man looks kind and gentle. The drawings seem to capture the bond between the fox and the man.

I am not sure who the artist is, but the drawings are signed “Jorge com M.”

I hope this answers your question.

I told Bard: The man is a Kokopelli.

Thank you for correcting me. I understand now that the man in the photo is Kokopelli, a fertility deity in the mythology of many Native American cultures. He is often depicted playing a flute and is associated with music, dance, and agriculture.

I apologize for my previous mistake. I am still under development and learning to identify and understand images accurately. I will use this feedback to improve my abilities in the future.

Is there anything else I can help you with today?

So next I asked: Can you create a short story (800 words) that represent a nice interaction between the two characters?

Beneath the shade of a towering saguaro cactus, Kokopelli, the humpbacked flute player, rested his weathered hands upon his instrument. His melodies, imbued with the spirit of the wind and the wisdom of the desert, drifted across the sunbaked earth.

Suddenly, a flash of red fur darted across his vision. A mischievous fox, its coat the color of a desert sunset, emerged from behind a prickly pear bush, its eyes gleaming with curiosity.

Kokopelli chuckled, the sound warm and inviting. “Ah, little fox,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble. “Come closer and rest your weary paws. Listen to the stories the wind whispers to my flute.”

The fox hesitated, its nose twitching nervously. Yet, drawn by the music and the warmth in Kokopelli’s eyes, it crept closer, finally settling down at the feet of the ancient being.

Kokopelli closed his eyes and began to play. His melody spoke of ancient times, of the creation of the earth and the first breath of life. It spoke of the changing seasons, the dance of the stars, and the secrets hidden within the heart of the desert.

The fox, mesmerized by the music, curled up at Kokopelli’s feet, its ears perked up in rapt attention. It listened as the music spoke of hidden oases and ancient trails, of playful spirits and cunning creatures. It felt the rhythm of the earth thrumming through its paws, the energy of the desert coursing through its veins.

When the last note faded into the air, the fox looked up at Kokopelli, its eyes wide with wonder. “Oh, wise one,” it whispered, “your music is like the sun warming the earth, like the rain quenching a thirst.”

Kokopelli smiled, a twinkle in his eyes. “The music is within you too, little fox,” he said. “It’s in the way you move, the way you hunt, the way you follow the whispers of the wind.”

He handed his flute to the curious creature. “Take it, and let your own music fill the air. Tell your story, share your laughter, and let the desert dance to your tune.”

The fox, its heart brimming with excitement, took the flute. It placed it to its snout and blew, a hesitant first note emerging, sweet and pure. Then, as it closed its eyes and listened to the whispers of the desert, its own unique melody began to flow, a vibrant tapestry of sound woven from the very essence of the wild.

And so, beneath the shade of the saguaro, the unlikely pair found a shared language, their music intertwining like the roots of ancient trees, a testament to the power of connection and the boundless creativity that thrives in the heart of the desert.

Pretty cool! Next: Can you create a short video of the story.

NOTE: It gave me an idea for the title of the story! (Love it!) and remarkable!

Unfortunately, I cannot create a video of the story at this time. However, I can provide you with a detailed script that you can use to create the video yourself. This script includes descriptions of the setting, characters, actions, and dialogue.

Title: The Melody of the Desert

[FADE IN]

SCENE 1

EXT. DESERT LANDSCAPE – DAY

A vast desert landscape stretches under a clear blue sky. The sun beats down on the sand, creating ripples of heat. Cacti stand tall, their prickly arms reaching towards the sun.

KOKOPELLI (a humpbacked figure with a decorated flute) sits under the shade of a saguaro cactus. He plays his flute, his melody echoing across the desert.

SOUND: Kokopelli’s flute playing a gentle, flowing melody.

Suddenly, a flash of red fur darts across the landscape.

FOX (a young, curious fox) emerges from behind a prickly pear bush. It looks around cautiously, then approaches Kokopelli.

SOUND: Light, playful music as the fox approaches.

Kokopelli stops playing and smiles warmly at the fox.

KOKOPELLI Ah, little fox. Come closer and rest your weary paws. Listen to the stories the wind whispers to my flute.

The fox hesitates, then cautiously approaches Kokopelli and sits down at his feet.

SOUND: The music becomes softer and more intimate.

SCENE 2

CLOSE UP – KOKOPELLI PLAYING FLUTE

Kokopelli resumes playing his flute. His melody becomes more complex, telling stories of ancient times, the changing seasons, and the secrets of the desert.

SCENE 4

CLOSE UP – FOX LISTENING

The fox opens its eyes and looks up at Kokopelli with wonder.

FOX Oh, wise one, your music is like the sun warming the earth, like the rain quenching a thirst.

KOKOPELLI The music is within you too, little fox. It’s in the way you move, the way you hunt, the way you follow the whispers of the wind.

SOUND: Kokopelli’s flute music becomes softer and more encouraging.

Kokopelli hands his flute to the fox.

KOKOPELLI Take it, and let your own music fill the air. Tell your story, share your laughter, and let the desert dance to your tune.

SCENE 5

CLOSE UP – FOX PLAYING FLUTE

The fox takes the flute and hesitantly puts it to its snout. A hesitant note emerges, sweet and pure.

SOUND: The fox plays a simple, tentative melody.

Then, as the fox closes its eyes and listens to the whispers of the desert, its own unique melody begins to flow. It is a vibrant tapestry of sound, playful and energetic, reflecting the spirit of the desert fox.

SOUND: The fox’s melody intertwines with Kokopelli’s flute music, creating a beautiful duet.

SCENE 6

EXT. DESERT LANDSCAPE

Kokopelli and the fox continue to play their music together, their melodies echoing across the desert.

SOUND: The duet continues, growing in complexity and beauty.

The sun begins to set, casting long shadows across the landscape. The stars start to appear in the darkening sky.

SCENE 7

CLOSE UP – FOX AND KOKOPELLI PLAYING

The fox and Kokopelli play until the last light fades. Then, they look at each other and smile.

KOKOPELLI Until next time, little fox. May your music continue to fill the desert with joy.

The fox nods, its eyes shining with excitement.

FOX Thank you, wise one. I will never forget your kindness.

SOUND: The music fades out as Kokopelli and the fox say goodbye.

Truly AMAZING! I stopped there. (weekend chores time!)

Total time spent: 15 minutes.

After the session ended (and wrote this blog) I did ask one last question for the session ( which BTW was saved in my history) —

Any ideas as to what to do with this next?

Unfortunately, I don’t have enough context to offer specific suggestions on what to do next with your project. However, I can offer a few general ideas based on the information you provided so far:

Video:

  • Create a short video based on the storyboard and music recommendations. You can use animation, illustrations, or live-action footage to bring the story to life.
  • Add sound effects and narration to enhance the audio experience.
  • Share the video on social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok.

Story:

  • Expand the story into a longer narrative. You could introduce additional characters, develop the existing characters further, or explore new themes and conflicts.
  • Write the story from the perspective of the fox or Kokopelli. This could offer a different perspective on the events and provide new insights into their motivations.
  • Publish the story as an ebook or submit it to literary magazines.

Art:

  • Create illustrations or paintings inspired by the story. These could be character portraits, landscape scenes, or abstract interpretations of the story’s themes.
  • Sell your artwork online or at local art fairs.
  • Design merchandise featuring your artwork, such as t-shirts, mugs, or tote bags.

Other:

  • Create a board game or card game based on the story.
  • Develop a musical piece inspired by the story’s themes and characters.
  • Organize a workshop or event based on the story’s themes, such as storytelling or music composition.

Ultimately, the best way to decide what to do next is to consider your own interests and goals. What would you like to achieve with this project? What are you most passionate about? Once you have a better understanding of what you want to do, you can start brainstorming specific ideas and taking steps to bring them to life.
